The city of Nuwara Eliya was founded in 1846 by Samuel Baker, an explorer who rediscovered Lake Albert in Uganda and surveyed the Nile River. Due to its high location and fresh climate, you will find great tea rooms and tea houses here. Cool temperatures provide ideal conditions for tea plantations, leaving the countryside covered with lush green fields that extend beyond the horizon.
The British influences are quite visible in the architecture which is why Nuwara Eliya is also called “Little England”.
