Sri Lanka is a bird-watching paradise. A tropical island in the Indian Ocean, located 10 degrees north of the equator, with diverse and favorable climatic conditions and natural habitats such as forests, shrublands, grasslands, swamps, seas, and agricultural lands. This birdwatching tour focuses primarily on Sri Lankan birds and all endemic birds. This tour aims to showcase more than 200 birds, including all 33 endemic species.

The country is home to 439 species of birds, of which 236 are breeding residents, 203 are migrants and the rest are migratory birds. 1 - Sinharaja Rainforest

The last pristine rainforest left on the island. A day’s safari in this beautiful place will give you a glimpse of 29 of the country’s 33 endemic birds. The Sinharaja bird wave is the largest, most observable, and longest-studied bird wave in the world and can be seen in the rainforest between November and March.

2 - Horton Plains National Park and the Kitulgala Forests

Two must-see bird-watching spots on a bird-watching tour in Sri Lanka. At these two locations, you can observe all endemic bird species on the island.

3 - Mannar and Bundala National Parks

The best time to visit these national parks is from October to April when hundreds of winter migratory birds seek food. Manners are also a great place to shoot flamingos.

4 - Sigiriya sanctuary

This sanctuary is located in and around the famous Sigiriya Rock, adjacent to Minneriya National Park. It is primarily a dry evergreen forest, with shrubs and dry deciduous forests. This is an ideal place to photograph forest birds such as peacocks, eagles, and beautiful Indian migratory birds. Fauna also includes a group of elephants that occasionally move to the area, the Sambar deer, and two types of monkeys.

5 - Victoria Park, Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya is a popular mountain resort that provides a cool and comfortable base for many mountain attractions such as Victoria Park and Hakgala Botanical Gardens. The vast hills and valleys are covered with the tallest tea bushes in the world, like green carpets. The scent of freshly brewed tea leaves from the tea factory permeates the gentle air.

6 - Yala National Park (Ruhuna National Park)

It’s the best park to see mammals in Sri Lanka, but there are also many birds. Yala is characterized by thorny forests, scrub jungles, brackish lagoons, and river habitats in tropical arid regions. Birds of prey were common. During the northeast monsoon, the lagoon is visited by thousands of migratory birds and waterfowl.

7 - Uda Walawa National Park

Located in an arid region, the park is known for its outstanding landscape beauty and abundance of animal species, especially mammals and birds. The opportunity to see the elephants up close is also a big attraction.

8 - Talangama Wetland

This wetland on the outskirts of Colombo is surrounded by motorways and is easily accessible to nature lovers. The complex of ponds, canals, and paddy fields is a rich and varied wetland. More than 100 species of birds have been recorded in the area, including the endangered endemic species, and Talangama is also suitable for photography of butterflies and dragonflies.

9 - Anawilundawa Wetland

Another Ramsar Wetland in Sri Lanka. It’s a great place to take pictures of butterflies and dragonflies. Today, this area is very popular with bird watching and nature lovers. During the migration season, you can see a variety of birds that use the area as both a feeding ground and a breeding ground. Anawilundawa covers 1,397 hectares and lies between the coastline and the Negombo – Putlam railway line. The wetland consists of six ancient man-made tanks and three surrounding tanks with paddy fields and village areas.

10 - Udawatte Kelle Sanctuary, Dunumadalawa Forest reserve, and yala Botanical Gardens, Peradeniya
