1 - Nuwara Eliya

Nuwara Eliya, the tallest town in Sri Lanka and a popular summer resort for the British, is located in the heart of the Southern Hill Country. The town has earned the title of “Little England” for its 18-hole golf course, racetracks, Victorian parks, and fishing spots along lakes and streams. Mercury often falls below freezing, and the Tudor-style house chimneys add to the colonial appeal of the town. Nuwara Eliya serves as a base for launching expeditions to the dense forests and Mt. Pidurutalagala.

Nuwara Eliya and its surrounding waterfalls include Lover’s Jumping Waterfall, Bombreela Waterfall, St. Clair Waterfall, and Devon Waterfall. 2 - Ella

The city is best known for its iconic nine-arch railway bridge, which is a good example of Sri Lanka’s colonial construction. Hiking along the railroad tracks to the bridge is a popular activity, especially when the train arrives. There are plenty of quaint cafes, hiking trails and guesthouses surrounded by hills for a quiet vacation. You can also visit the famous Lipton’s seat. Here, Sir Thomas Lipton, the tea mogul, oversaw the growing empire.

Hiking through the bamboo grove to the stunning Ella Rock and Little Adams Peak is a great achievement. The second highest waterfall in Sri Lanka, Diyaluma Falls, overlooks a natural pool in the mountains of Ella. World-famous Ceylon tea lovers love plantations, tea factories and era spice gardens.

4 - Adam's Peak

Towering above the hills in the southwestern part of Hill Country is Adam Speak, also known as Sri Pada. This peak is considered sacred by believers of all religions in Sri Lanka and attracts thousands of pilgrims each year. Climbing is a 4800-step intense night hike that rewards a strange phenomenon unique to this location, the spectacular view of the rising sun that completely casts a triangular shadow on the clouds below.
