Sri Lanka is a great destination to visit different places. Off the coast of India, this island of the Indian Ocean offers visitors an incredibly diverse environment and attractions to enjoy and experience.
When planning your Sri Lankan adventure, keep in mind that the rainy season of the country lasts from May to August. December-April is usually the best time to visit. The shoulder season, September, October and November are also good times to visit.
The capital combines the convenience of a modern city with the country’s colorful indigenous and colonial history. Sri Lanka has played a strategically important role for Europe’s trading powers as an important stop for the world’s spice trade routes. The country is a colony of Portugal, the Netherlands and more recently England, all of which blend with indigenous cultures to create a wonderful blend. These effects can be tasted in food, seen in architecture and art, and actually felt in Colombo.
Sri Lanka’s commercial center seamlessly blends modern malls and skyscrapers with beautiful colonial buildings. The city has various architectural styles, and Murgan Hindu Temple is one of the best temples.
Colombo is a chaotic place, but it has everything a city needs. You will definitely come across great restaurants, fascinating museums, and lots of great shops. There are also many great nightlives.
Colombo Lotus Tower, the city’s new mega tower, is a great place to visit. The tallest free-standing tower in Southeast Asia offers stunning views of the city. In addition to indoor and outdoor viewing areas, there is a chic restaurant on the top floor and a popular food court in the mall at the foot of the tower.
One of the coolest (and tallest) spots in Colombo is also one of the newest in the city. The Colombo Lotus Tower is South Asia’s tallest self-sustaining structure (368 meters / 1,168 feet), and a trip to the summit rewards visitors with unobstructed views of Colombo and the surrounding cityscape and ocean.
The tower, which houses many communications equipment, has a communications museum, a shopping mall (base), a rotating fine dining restaurant, and indoor and outdoor display areas. The tower can also be seen from the outside. Covered with LED lighting, you can watch a seasonal light show every night.
The Lotus Tower, designed to recreate the lotus bulbs and flowers, at the same time represents the country’s historical culture and focus on the future.
The Colombo National Museum, also known as the Colombo National Museum, is the official museum of Sri Lanka and will take you on a journey of Sri Lankan culture for thousands of years. It’s one of the museums with a wide variety of media, from artwork to artifacts, clothing, jewelry, coins, weapons and crafts. The exhibition introduces both national cultural and natural heritage in chronological order from prehistoric times to the present.
Colombo’s Central Park (and one of the few large open spaces) This vast green space has an area where you can relax and enjoy the sun (or escape). The park has many fountains and a small zoo. Children can enjoy the playground. You can visit the Senotaph (War Memorial of Korea) and the National Library in the park.
The park also houses a large 15-foot Buddha statue, the largest brass statue in the country. The park is now named after one of the country’s ancient queens and was formerly known as Victoria Park. Vihara Mahadevi Park is located between the Colombo National Museum and the City Hall.
This large, modern performing arts complex offers a wide range of musical, dance and cultural performances. It was recently renamed after Mahinda Rajapaksa, the former president of the country. Like many others in Sri Lanka, the design is deliberately reminiscent of lotus flowers.
This program includes symphony performances and operas (Chinese, Sri Lanka, Western). They also offer modern pop concerts. Performances will take place in the main hall or the open-air amphitheater. The theater is located in the center of Colombo, opposite the Vihara Mahadevi Park.
Theater schedules can be viewed online and tickets can also be purchased online. Surrounded by locals no matter what you look at, it’s a great place to visit Colombo.
From around 2000, this former industrial area of Colombo was transformed into a thriving floating market with nearly 100 vendors. Pettah is located in the center of Colombo, about 5 minutes’ drive from Fort.
The floating market is located along a canal lined with sidewalks and promenades. They cross along the canal, making it a fun area for shopping, walking, and observing people. There is also great street food here. It is also a market for fruits and vegetables.
Another of Colombo’s most popular places for picnics, relaxation, boating and running is Lake Bere. This artificial lake (not to be confused with its larger neighbor, Lake Beira) is surrounded by greenery, but in the heart of the city.
There are many jogging trails in this area, making it a great place for jogging and cycling. There are swan boats that can be rented and rowed around the lake. There are several snack bars and a water gourmet restaurant.
The restaurant is on a boat and floats during the dinner cruise.
Lake Bere has its own island (connected by a suspension bridge). The island is a popular place for couples to go for a romantic walk. Elsewhere on the lake, there is a small Buddhist temple in the water of some pillars. The lake is a great place to take pictures, especially at night. There is a beautiful outdoor environment with the Colombo skyline in the background.
