Pinnawala

Pinnawala is a small town in Sri Lanka, located in the Kegalle District. Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is an orphanage, nursery and breeding ground for Asian wild elephants located in the village of Pinnawala. . It was established in 1975 by the Sri Lankan Department of Wildlife Conservation.

Pinnawala has the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. In 2011, there were 96 elephants, including 43 males and 68 females of 3 generations, living in Pinnawala

approximately 107 km away from Colombo towards Kandy.  Located in 13 kilometers northeast of the city of Kegalle in the province of Sabaragamuwa in Sri Lanka.
