After the destruction of Anuradhapura in 993, Polonnaruwa was established as the capital of the Chola empire in the latter part of the 10th century, under the name Jananathapuram. For three centuries, the ancient city of Polonnaruwa served as the capital of both the Chola and Sinhalese kingdoms. It was the capital of Sri Lanka for three hundred years. In the 13th century, it was abandoned and the capital moved to Colombo
Given the status of a World Heritage Site in 1982, Polonnaruwa is now considered one of the world’s most preserved cities. There are hundreds of ancient structures – palaces, temples, tombs, statues, all located in a compact space that makes it much easier to explore.
