Sigiriya

Sigiriya is a small town in northeastern Sri Lanka. About a two-hour journey from Kandy or Anuradhapura.  If you are in the middle of nowhere, you can see a rock, high above houses and trees.

Sigiriya was renamed the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Legend has it that King Kassapa (AD 477-495) chose Sigiriya as the capital of Sri Lanka, and built an undisputed territory and palace on a rock, after the assassination of his father King Dhatusena. The capital and royal palace were abandoned after the death of the king and were used as the site of a Buddhist monastery until the 14th century. . Around Lion Rock there are magnificent royal gardens, which include water gardens, large stone gardens, and terrace gardens.

WHERE IS SIGIRIYA?

Sigiriya is at the heart of the Cultural Triangle in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province.  About a two-hour journey from Kandy or Anuradhapura. The distance between Colombo and Sigiriya is 150 km. It is roughly an hour and 33mins travel to Sigiriya.

WHY VISIT SIGIRIYA SRI LANKA ?

At first glance, there is not much you can do in Sigiriya other than Lion Rock. However, appearances can be deceptive. Sigiriya is one of the most famous historical monuments in Sri Lanka. The locals call this palace and ancient fortress the eighth wonder of the world and it has important archeology and attracts thousands of visitors every year. This is probably the most visited tourist destination in Sri Lanka. One of Sigiriya’s best features is its visual walls. The walls of the mirror are painted with texts and poems written for Sigiriya’s guests.
